This past Saturday I attended the first event of the Castaic Lake Fit For Fun Program. Designed as a preview of events to come in the following weeks, this first hike was a Preview Hike and the park guides gave us a quick tour of the main area of the park and the starting points of some great hikes in the park.
We gathered at the park headquarters for some introductions and then started out on our tour.
Halfway through our hike I got a nice surprise…a peak at the Emerald Forest. It was a nice shaded spot tucked in at the base of one of the overlook trails.
Come to find out there are lots of hiking trails in the park, as well as some trails for mountain bikes. There are varying degrees of difficulty and lengths. The Fit For Fun Program was designed by the employees at the Castaic Lake State Recreation Area in order to get more people to the park to not only experience what all it has to offer, but to give them some great alternatives to getting and keeping in shape. Did you know that you can boat, fish, water ski, hike, mountain bike, swim, and kayak at the lake? I knew about the water sports, but not the land ones.
So, if you are looking for something to do and hiking is your game you’ll want to check out the Fit For Fun Program at Castaic Lake. The hikes are open to the public and the only cost is park admission for your vehicle which is $11.00. They recommend dressing in layers and bringing water so that you stay comfortable and enjoy yourself. The next hike is a scavenger hunt which should be fun and it if you are interested in the program you can click here for more information.
